Understanding the National Curriculum

The National Curriculum was set up in 1989 to ensure that a variety of subjects were being taught at the same standard in state schools in England and states:

  • The subjects to be taught
  • The knowledge and skills students should be achieving in each subject
  • Targets

The National Curriculum consists of 5 key stages:

Key Stage 1 Years 1 and 2 Ages 5-7
Key Stage 2 Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 Ages 7-11
Key Stage 3 Years 7, 8 and 9 Ages 11-14
Key Stage 4 Years 10 and 11 Ages 14-16
Key Stage 5 Years 12 and 13 Ages 16-18
